Description

This is a highly targeted 12-week program designed to prepare 4th to 8th grade students for Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS). I created it after realizing that I needed something more structured than random puzzles or isolated hard math problems.

I now use this program both in my classroom and for personal tutoring.

What I was really looking for was a sequence of problems that gradually and methodically increases in difficulty, so students can build the required skills without getting discouraged. MOEMS problems are extremely challenging, so a gradual progression is crucial.

However, most resources I found were simply collections of random Math Olympiad problems. They lacked a clear progression, an easy way to map them to grade level, and a quick method to track which skills students had mastered and which topics still needed attention.

So I ended up creating my own program. It worked very well with my students, helping them develop logical and mathematical thinking, and I hope it will be just as useful for you in your classroom or your tutoring side business.

WHAT'S INSIDE

1) Diagnostic Assessment: A full simulation of a real Math Olympiad for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS) competition

2) 10 Targeted Deep Dives: Questions are categorized by grade and difficulty level (E1, E2, M3, M4, M5). Each category splits into two weekly deep dives (A and B), leading to a 10 week deep dive program

3) Weekly Scoring Rubric: Each deep dive ends with a scoring tool that allows you to identify the most frequently missed strategies, write down action plans, and record growth vs the previous deep dive. These can be easily cut out and sent home

4) Final Test: Another full simulation of the Math Olympiad (MOEMS) competition that makes growth from Week 1 clearly visible. This allows you to highlight score improvement and objectively show parents the value of your work

HOW I USE IT

I run this once a week for about three months. We discuss a couple problems together and then I let students work on their own on the remaining problems of that week. I then score their results, write comments, record growth, and send home the results.

I built this to prepare gifted students for Math Olympiad competitions since it is a program our school offers. And obviously, it does that by design. But two other benefits stood out to me while using it:

1) It is an amazing tool for a side business as a tutor. If your school runs a Math Olympiad program, I recommend handing out a flyer offering tutoring for Olympiad preparation. This is much better than typical tutoring. It's structured, everyone follows the same curriculum, and it is easy to turn it into a much more lucrative small group tutoring setup. Also, you are finally dealing with smart students in your after school tutoring business!

2) Parents love it. It just makes them proud that their kids are doing this, which greatly improves the relationship (it hasn't been long enough to verify yet, but I suspect it will also lead to longer retention compared to other tutoring topics).
